Leadership training for the grassroots leaders on "climate justice for food sovereignty"
The issue : Climate Justice and Food Sovereignty:
In the Bangladeshi context, food sovereignty will not be achieved without climate justice. Climate change already threatened food security in Bangladesh many times. Thousands of people especially people from farming communities already migrated as climate refugees. Climate change is hammering down the food production over the years. Crops failure is the common scenario for many farmers and cyclone, flood, storm surge are more frequent and stronger than before. In this worst situation, climate justice can give the best chance to the Bangladeshi farming communities to survive in better scale.
Food sovereignty has been recognised by peasant movements as one of the most important practices that enable peasant communities to both mitigate, and adapt to, the effects of climate change. Food sovereignty implies control over land and farming-related resources and ecological sustainability and has acted as a point of encounter, common interest and solidarity between farmer’s movements. Food sovereignty addresses the inequalities connected to the dominant political economy of food, including issues of nutrition, public health, and power relations existing in countries such as Bangladesh.
The training will be divided in two to reduce the expenses. One will take place in northern divisional city Rangpur and another one in southern divisional city Barisal. 60 grassroots leaders will attend as trainees in each place and it will be 3 days long training. There will be group discussion and Q&A season as well. There will be also one outdoor activity. Local BKF leaders will organise a procession on climate justice and food sovereignty and all the trainees will attend the procession and chant the slogans. The outdoor activity date and time will set by the local organisers.
Project Justification and Aims:
Bangladesh is a religious country. Even today most of the Bangladeshi believes that the climate change is made by Allah (God). Also most of the NGO and Government climate change related programs are not reaching the poor agricultural communities who are the most vulnerable to the changed climate. BKF is working with those poorest communities and trying hard to take preparation to decrease the peoples sufferings in the environmental disaster time.
The aims of this training project is to trained lots of grassroots leaders who will be part of trainer groups gradually in the divisional level, district level and sub-district level across the country. The Bangladeshi agricultural communities deserve better chance to survive from the climate change disasters. Bangladeshi people deserve the climate justice. If we failed to change the mind setup of Bangladeshi poor communities, the religious people of Bangladesh will pray to God and die, will not even try to survive in the climate change disasters. Only a huge awareness building campaign can change the peoples understanding of climate change science and mechanism and BKF wants to take responsibilities to run the awareness campaign. This training project is the first step of that mega project.
The BKF will choose the potential trainers for the future trainer team from this leadership training program. The potential trainers will get farther training before get responsibility to run the climate change awareness program in the village level.
